I don’t have insurance:
Cash-Based options including local and web-based retailers (Durable Medical Equipment providers, Amazon, etc.) are options; sometimes purchasing in bulk can save cost, but ensure your source is reputable.
I have insurance:
Commercial Insurances, Medicare and UPHP/Medicare all cover ostomy supplies under the Durable Medical Equipment (DME) benefit. With a prescription from your provider/ostomy nurse team, pouches, wafers, accessories, and other supplies are dispensed on a monthly basis. The quantity provided each month may vary based on your individual policy.
There are also charity resources, such as those listed in our resources page available for more assistance.
Supplies are available from a variety of manufacturers, including three main US distributors: Coloplast, Convatec and Hollister.
(See our resource page for links)
Your ostomy nurse can help you select your best fit by asking questions, performing a physical assessment, and learning about your unique needs.
I do not have or cannot get a prescription:
Sources become more limited to online retailers; they may not qualify for insurance coverage/reimbursement
I have or I can get a prescription:
Your provider/ostomy nurse team can fax your prescription to community, regional and nation-wide suppliers. These agencies work with your insurance/Health Care Savings Account for payment and reimbursement.
